The general rule in Islam is that whatever we should follow must have evidence backing it up either from the Qur'an or the AUTHENTIC Sunnah. We simply cannot go on and introduce anything into Islam for which there's no evidence either in the Qur'an or the authentic Sunnah.
Allah (SWT) says in the Qur'an:
“He who obeys the Messenger has indeed obeyed Allaah . . .” [al-Nisaa’ 4:80]
Allaah described obedience to the Prophet (peace be upon him) as being a part of obedience to Him. Then He made a connection between obedience to Him and obedience to the Prophet (peace be upon him):
“O you who believe! Obey Allaah and obey the Messenger . . .” [al-Nisaa’ 4:59]
We would like the ask the questioner that what do those verses mean?
Do they not mean that a Muslim must only follow the Qur'an and the Sunnah?
Or do they mean that follow the Qur'an, Sunnah and something for which there is no proof?
Then how come a Muslim can follow something for which there can be found no proof at all? How can anyone follow anything in Islam without any proof?
When something has not been narrated at all in the Qur'an or Sunnah, then how come can you follow it? What's the evidence?
Allaah warns us not to go against the Prophet (peace be upon him), and states that whoever disobeys him will be doomed to eternal Hell. Allah (SWT) says in the Qur'an:
“. . . And let those who oppose the Messenger’s commandment beware, lest some fitnah (trial, affliction, etc.) befall them or a painful torment be inflicted on them.” [al-Nur 24:63]
The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) used to say, when beginning a khutbah (sermon): "… The best of speech is the Book of Allaah and the best of guidance is the guidance of Muhammad. The worst of things are those which are newly-invented, and every innovation is a going astray…" (reported by Muslim, no. 867)
What was the thing in the above Hadith which Prophet (Peace be upon him) referred to as 'worst of things'? He said that every newly invented thing is the worst of things! And saying Jummah Mubarak to people is something which is newly invented. It was never known during the time of Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him). Had it been something good to wish Jummah Mubarak, the Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) would have had done it himself. The fact is that there is not even a single report narrated in the whole of the Sunnah which says that Prophet or his Sahabas every wishes each other Jummah Mubarak. Then how come can we do something which was not even done by the Prophet or the Sahabas himself?
"The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: 'Whoever innovates something in this matter of ours that is not a part of it will have it rejected.'" (Reported by al-Bukhaari, Fath al-Baari, no. 2697). How can anybody then say that bid'ah is acceptable and it is permitted to follow it?
Jummah Mubarak is a newly invented matter, it is an Innovation (Bid'ah)!
“”But no, by your Lord, they can have no Faith, until they make you [Muhammad] judge in all disputes between them, and find in themselves no resistance against your decisions, and accept (them) with full submission.” [al-Nisaa’ 4:65]
The above verse makes it clear that in any case of dispute we have to make Muhammad (Peace be upon him) as our judge. Today, we can use his Hadiths (the sayings of Prophet Muhammad) to be our judge in such disputes. So, based on his Hadiths, Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) declared every newly invented thing the 'worst of things'. Based on his hadiths Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) declared that every newly invented thing will be rejected. Based on his Hadiths, the Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) declared that every innovation (Bid'ah, a newly invented thing) will lead one astray from the correct path of Islam will eventually lead one to the Hell-Fire.
"Every newly-invented thing is a bid'ah (innovation), every bid'ah is a going astray, and every going astray will be in the Fire." (Reported by al-Nisaa'i in al-Sunan, Salaat al-'Eedayn, Baab kayfa al-Khutbah)
Those are not our words, but those are the words of Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) who every now and then condemned every innovation in strict words.
We would ask the questioner and the reader that what could be more worse than going astray, being misguided and eventually getting ended up in the Hell Fire?
PART 2
Allaah commands His slaves to respond to Him and His Messenger: “O you who believe! Answer Allaah (by obeying Him) and (His) Messenger when he calls you to that which will give you life . . .” [al-Anfaal 8:24]
Did the Messenger ever called us and asked us to wish Jummah Mubarak?
Al-Tirmidhi reported from Abu Raafi’ and others that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “I do not want to see any one of you reclining on his couch and, when he hears of my instructions or prohibitions, saying ‘I don’t accept it; we didn’t find any such thing in the Book of Allaah.’” Abu ‘Eesaa said: This is a saheeh hasan hadeeth. (See Sunan al-Tirmidhi, Shaakir edition, no. 2663).
Isn't it a part of his instructions to stay away from all the newly invented matters? Hasn't the Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) prohibited from following any newly invented matter?
Al-’Irbaad ibn Saariyah, may Allaah be pleased with him, reported that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Would any of you think, reclining on his couch, that Allaah would only describe what is forbidden in the Qur’aan? I tell you, by Allaah, that I have warned and commanded and prohibited things that are as important as what is in the Qur’aan, if not more so.” (Reported by Abu Dawud, Kitaab al-Khiraj wa’l-imaarah wa’l-fay’).
The above Hadith speaks for itself! It tells us the importance of following what has been prescribed by the Prophet (Peace be upon him). Is wishing Jummah Mubarak something that has been prescribed by our Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him)?
Abu Dawud also reported from al-’Irbaad ibn Saariyah, may Allaah be pleased with him, that “the Messenger of Allaah (peace be upon him) led us in prayer one day, then he turned to us and exhorted us strongly . . . (he said), ‘Pay attention to my sunnah (way) and the way of the Rightly-guided Khaleefahs after me, adhere to it and hold fast to it.’” (Saheeh Abi Dawud, Kitaab al-Sunnah).
According to the above mentioned hadith, we must adhere to the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) and the way of the Rightly Guided Khaleefas. We have been asked to follow it and hold fast to it. We haven't been ask to follow anything else which couldn't be found in the ways of our Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) and the Rightly Guided Khaleefas and there is not even a single report which can serve as a proof that it was the way of our Messenger and his Khaleefas to wish Jummah Mubarak.
Now let us see what the notable Islamic scholars have agreed upon.
The scholars’ consensus (ijmaa’) affirming the importance of the Sunnah.
Al-Shaafi’i, may Allaah have mercy on him, said: “I do not know of anyone among the Sahaabah and Taabi’een who narrated a report from the Messenger of Allaah (peace be upon him) without accepting it, adhering to it and affirming that this was sunnah. Those who came after the Taabi’een, and those whom we met did likewise: they all accepted the reports and took them to be sunnah, praising those who followed them and criticizing those who went against them. Whoever deviated from this path would be regarded by us as having deviated from the way of the Companions of the Prophet (peace be upon him) and the scholars who followed them, and would be considered as one of the ignorant.
PROCEED TO THE LAST PART [PART 3]
THE LAST ARGUMENT FROM THE QUR'AN:
Allaah also commands His slaves to refer all disputes to him: “. . . (And) if you differ in anything amongst yourselves, refer it to Allaah and His Messenger . . .” [al-Nisaa’ 4:59]
The above verse is the ULTIMATE answer to anyone who insists on following something which has NEVER been prescribed by our Prophet (Peace be upon him). There's no verse in the Qur'an which prescribes wishing Jummah Mubarak and there's no Hadith which prescribes that wishing Jummah Mubarak was something that was known and done at the time of Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him). Hence, wishing Jummah Mubarak is a newly invented matter which has no basis whatsoever in Islam.
Allah (SWT) says in the Qur'an:
O Messenger, announce that which has been revealed to you from your Lord, and if you do not, then you have not conveyed His message. And Allah will protect you from the people. Indeed, Allah does not guide the disbelieving people.
[Surah Maidah 5:67]
Allah (SWT) clearly commanded Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) to announce what has been REVEALED to him and if he did not do so, then he has NOT COMPLETED THE MESSAGE OF ALLAH!
We believe that Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) announced everything which was revealed to him. Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) never prescribed or announced wishing Jummah Mubarak. In other words, can we ask the questioner or the reader that is he/she accusing the Messenger of Allah (SWT) for not revealing the full message of Allah (SWT) to us? [We seek refuge from Allah!]
Islam is based on proofs and evidence and not on whims and desires. Allah (SWT) Himself 'perfected' Islam and we are NO ONE to invent new things into it.
This day I have perfected for you your religion and completed My favor upon you and have approved for you Islam as religion.
