This is a lengthy answer but every single word in this answer will tremendously increase the knowledge of the reader. In this answer we have thoroughly explained the issue of Bid’ah and the Sciences of Hadiths about which majority of the people have no knowldge. We urge you to read the full answer. We promise that the reader will be heavily benefit from this answer.
First off, we shall begin by providing you the definition of Bid’ah (i.e. innovation in Deen))
The definition is ‘Worshipping Allaah in ways that Allaah has not prescribed.’ If you wish you may say, ‘Worshipping Allaah in ways that are not those of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) or his rightly guided successors (al-khulafaa’ al-raashidoon).’”
Any way of worship or anything else which was not done either by Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) or was not mentioned in the Qur’an is a Bid’ah.
We hope the definition is clear to you.
"The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:
'Whoever innovates something in this matter of ours that is not a part of it will have it rejected.'" (Reported by al-Bukhaari, Fath al-Baari, no. 2697)
The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) stated repeatedly that:
"Every newly-invented thing is a bid'ah (innovation), every bid'ah is a going astray, and every going astray will be in the Fire." (Reported by al-Nisaa'i in al-Sunan, Salaat al-'Eedayn, Baab kayfa al-Khutbah)
Our deen has been already ‘perfected’ by Allah (SWT). Then how come can we add something to something which has been ‘perfected’ by Allah (SWT) Himself? Are we humans worthy of that? Who gave us the right?
'This day have I perfected your religion for you, completed My favour upon you, and have chosen for you Islam as your religion' (Surah Maidah - Verse 3)
How can then one innovate something in Islam when has been already perfected by Allah (SWT)? Islam is like a glass filled completely with water. If anyone of us will drop pebbles or stones in it, the water will rise up and hence will fall!
Same is the issue with Islam. If innovations are added into this 'perfected' religion, it will not help Islam in anyway rather it'll collapse it.
From your name, we think that you most probably belong to Pakistan. In Pakistan and India, Bid’ah is spread widely and the reason of this is the lack of knowledge. People go on and do anything which they see happening around them without even knowing if that specific so called Islamic ritual that those people are doing has any evidence backing up what they are doing from the Qur’an or the AUTHENTIC Sunnah.
There is this famous act of holding Khatam-e-Qur’an gatherings for the dead where the Qur’an is recited so that it’s reward may reach the dead.
To tell you, there is no verse in the Qur’an or no reliable report (hadiths) narrated which shows that holding Khatam-e-Qur’an gatherings for the dead is something allowed in Islam! Not even a single verse in the Qur’an or a single authentic Hadith tells us that holding such gatherings has any basis in Islam. This famous gathering is a Bid’ah (an innovation).
Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) said that after a person dies all of his connections from this world end except three which are 1) Ongoing charity [Sadaqah Jariiya] (2) Righteous (Saalih) offsprings (sons/daughters) asking forgiveness for their parent(s) who have died (3) Useful knowledge which he/she learned and spread around through which people are beniffting.
Ibn Maajah (242) narrated that Abu Hurayrah said: “The good deeds that will reach a believer after his death are: knowledge which he learned and then spread; a righteous son whom he leaves behind; a copy of the Qur’aan that he leaves as a legacy; a mosque that he built; a house that he built for wayfarers; a canal that he dug; or charity that he gave during his lifetime when he was in good health. These deeds will reach him after his death.” This hadeeth hwas classed as hasan by al-Albaani in Saheeh Ibn Maajah.
Milab-un-Nabi is another famous innovation which has, whatsover, no basis in the complete Qur’an and the authentic Sunnah. Open this link to read our answer in which we critically analyzed the Bid’ah of celebrating Milab-un-Nabi.

Now, we shall proceed towards explaining you that how can we avoid innovations and how can we know what rituals in Islam are actually innovations.
The general rule in Islam is that whatever we follow or do must have evidence backing it up from the Qur’an and/or the AUTHENTIC Sunnah (Hadiths)
There is a well developed Science of Hadith which is used to class a Hadith. The classifications of Hadith are Sahih (Authentic), Da’eef (Weak), Da’eef Jidaan, (Very weak), Mawdoo (Fabricated), Hassan (good) etc....
Allaah has guaranteed to protect His religion, which includes preserving His miraculous Book, and preserving the Sunnah of His Prophet which helps us to understand the Qur’aan. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):
“Verily, We, it is We Who have sent down the Dhikr (i.e. the Qur’ân) and surely, We will guard it (from corruption).” [al-Hijr 15:9]
The word Dhikr here includes both the Qur’aan and the Sunnah.
Many people – in the past and at present – have tried to insert weak and fabricated ahaadeeth into the pure sharee’ah and the Prophetic Sunnah. But Allaah has thrown their plots back in their faces and has provided means of protecting His religion. Among these means are the trustworthy and reliable scholars who sifted through the reports and checked their sources, examining the biographies of the narrators and even describing the point at which a narrator began to be confused in his narration, and stating who narrated from him before he became confused and who narrated from him afterwards. They described the journeys of the narrator, which cities he visited and from whom in each city he took reports. They checked many details about each narrator, more than can be listed here. All of this indicates that the religion of this Ummah is protected, no matter how hard our enemies try to plot and play about with the religion and distort it.
Al-Haafiz al-Dhahabi mentioned that Haaroon al-Rasheed was about to execute a zindeeq (heretic), and the zindeeq said: “What are you going to do about the one thousand ahaadeeth I have fabricated?” Al-Rasheed said: “What are you going to do, O enemy of Allaah, about Abu Ishaaq al-Fazaari and ‘Abd-Allaah ibn al-Mubaarak, who will sift through those ahaadeeth and examine them letter by letter?”
The seeker of knowledge can find out about the fabricated (mawdoo’) and weak (da’eef) ahaadeeth very easily, by looking at the isnaads or chains of narrators, and finding out about the people mentioned there in the “books of men” i.e., narrators (kutub al-rijaal) and the books which state which narrators are sound or otherwise (kutab al-jarh wa’l-ta’deel).
Many scholars have compiled these fabricated and weak ahaadeeth in books devoted solely to these type of reports, so that it is easy to find out about them – then one can beware of them and warn others about them. These books include al-‘Ilal al-Mutanaahiyah by Ibn al-Jawzi, al-Manaar al-Muneef by Ibn al-Qayyim, al-La’aali’ al-Masnoo’ah fi’l-Ahaadeeth al-Mawdoo’ah by al-Suyooti, al-Fawaa’id al-Majmoo’ah by al-Shawkaani, al-Asraar al-Marfoo’ah fi’l-Ahaadeeth al-Mawdoo’ah by Ibn ‘Arraaq, and Da’eef al-Jaami’ al-Sagheer and Silsilat al-Ahaadeeth al-Da’eefah wa’l-Mawdoo’ah, both by Shaykh al-Albaani, may Allaah have mercy on him.
We advise our brother to read the “books of men” i.e., narrators (kutub al-rijaal), the books which state which narrators are sound or otherwise (kutab al-jarh wa’l-ta’deel) and the books of the science of hadeeth (kutub mustalah al-hadeeth), so that he can learn the extent of the efforts made by the scholars in the service of the Sunnah.
