(Sister, we are just giving you a 'highlight' answer to your question. We are not sure whether you are a Muslimah or your belong to some other religion [Please accept our apology if we are mistaken]. So, we have tried to you a brief and a short answer which will atleast make you understand the issue of sects in Islam. Please let us know if you need some othe details with regards to this issue)
The answer to your question is lengthy and deserves a book itself. But we will try to be brief as much as possible.
First off, The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) told us beforehand that this Ummah would be divided as the previous nations were divided, as stated in the saheeh hadeeth:-
“The Jews were divided into seventy-one or seventy-two sects, and the Christians were divided into seventy-one or seventy-two sects, and my Ummah will be divided into seventy-three sects.” This was narrated by Abu Dawood in his Sunan, Kitaab al-Sunnah, Baab Sharh al-Sunnah.
In another Hadith the Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) said:-
“The Jews were divided into seventy-one sects, one of which is in Paradise and seventy are in the Fire. The Christians were divided into seventy-two sects, seventy-one of which are in the Fire and one is in Paradise. By the One in Whose hand is the soul of Muhammad, my Ummah will be divided into seventy-three sects, one of which will be in Paradise and seventy-two will be in the Fire.” It was said, O Messenger of Allaah, who are they? He said, “Al-Jamaa’ah.”
Sunan Ibn Maajah, no. 3982.
What is meant by al-Jamaa’ah is the ‘aqeedah (creed) and actions of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) and his Companions.
The Ahlus Sunnah Wa’l Jama’ah (commonly known as Sunnis) are the mainstream Muslims who make up 85% of the Muslims all around the world. Some 12% are the Shias and the rest of the 3% belong to other numerous sects.
We, the Sunnis believe in the Qur’an and the authentic Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) as told us by Allah (SWT):-
“He who obeys the Messenger, has indeed obeyed Allaah, but he who turns away, then we have not sent you (O Muhammad) as a watcher over them.” [al-Nisa’ 4:80]
“But no, by your Lord, they can have no Faith, until they make you (O Muhammad) judge in all disputes between them, and find in themselves no resistance against your decisions, and accept (them) with full submission.” [al-Nisa’ 4:65]
...And many other verses of the Qur’an commands us to follow the ways of Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) such as in [al-Nisaa’ 4:59], [al-Nur 24:63], [al-Anfaal 8:24], [al-Nisaa’ 4:59].
We hope that you understood crux of the matter. Ask us again if you wish to know any sort of details with regards to this issue of sects in Islam.
